One thing I think is so important about this album is that besides being fan-generated, except for PayPal or SL transaction fees, every penny, every Linden goes straight to the artist and only to the artist. No middlemen, no distribution cut, no anything. When you look at the math behind traditional RIAA album sales, on an $18 album, the artist MAYBE gets 85 cents or so. Even with independent album sales, a $12 CD has a $4 CD Baby cost, $2 duplication cost, $1 shipping cost - which means that they come home with $5 per album.

Hopefully in the days to come, other artists will be able to copy the Virtual Hot Wings template and raise money themselves for things like tours, albums, etc.
